But, being Neil Young, he did what Neil Young does: change, again. It must’ve been nice, being on the edge of 50 and lionized by people half your age. At the time, Young was coming off some of the noisiest, most radical shows of Crazy Horse’s career (captured on Weld) and had been recast as the progenitor of a generation of underground bands like Nirvana and Sonic Youth-a distinction you couldn’t quite give to David Crosby, all due respect. Simple yet sophisticated, each elegant plate is accompanied by thoughtfully selected wine pairs or mindful mocktails combined, they tell a story of culture and cultivation. The connection to Harvest is explicit, but the album also fits in a set of what you could call Gentle Neil: Comes a Time, Old Ways, Prairie Wind, Homegrown. Named for the year the building was completed, Wyndhurst Mansion’s gourmet restaurant is Miraval Berkshires’ go-to for an evening of glamorous gastronomy. The album’s most touching moment is on “Old King,” where, in the course of eulogizing a beloved dog, Young mentions having kicked him when he was bad: a moment of violence neutralized by time and made strangely beautiful by the fact that Young knows it won’t ever happen again. The effect is like looking at a hologram, or a trick image that changes when you tilt the card back and forth: The object is fixed, but what you see in it flickers-and both feel equally real.
The poignancy isn’t just in the latter album’s tenderness-the string sections, the country lilt, the pedal steel guitar-but in the way that Young slips between past and present: how a memory of then becomes a vision of now (“Unknown Legend”), how circular time stirs feelings we think we’ve forgotten (“Harvest Moon”).
So, while the feel of the albums is similar-gentle, plaintive, romantic-the experience is different: one, a catalog of romance according to youth, and the other according to the reflections of middle age.

The same person, maybe, but separated by a Rubicon of experience. The Harvest Moon is the name given to the full Moon that takes place closest to the autumn equinox.
But Harvest was made by a recently divorced 26-year-old still negotiating his creative path, and Harvest Moon by a multiplatinum legend who’d secured the privilege of doing more or less whatever he wanted. The most recent game is Harvest Moon: One World, released in 2020. The main objective of the games is to rebuild a run-down old farm and turn it into a successful one.

Some of these names tell us what crops were harvested with the help of this bright moon in days of old.One way to hear Harvest Moon is as an echo of 1972’s Harvest-a leap made easier by the fact that many of the same musicians played on both. Harvest Moon is a farm simulation role-playing video game series published by Natsume Inc. Switch had a sale for this game and unfortunately I let nostalgia get the best of me. The Harvest Moon may also be called a Corn Moon, Barley Moon, or Wine Moon (all names for September's full moon), or the Singing Moon or Elk Call Moon ( we can get behind this name!). I loved Harvest Moon as a kid on SNES and loved the one on the Game Cube. So, we enjoy several evenings of full (and nearly full) moons that light the sky just as the sun drops off. An enjoyable, relaxed evening of food, live music and more to benefit the nature centers well-loved. The result: Not only can you expect a prompt full moon rise at sunset, but also the moon rises only 25 to 30 minutes later each day (the delay gets even shorter the farther north you are of the equator, says ). The following night, normally you can expect the moon to rise about 50 minutes later as the moon travels along its tilted orbit.ĭuring a Harvest Moon, however, the moon's orbit is nearly parallel to the Earth's eastern horizon at sunset.
In general, a full moon rises and sets on the opposite schedule of the sun (the sun and moon on are on opposite sides of the Earth during this moon phase, after all). We can thank the moon's orbital position in relation to Earth this time of year for the qualities of the Harvest Moon.
